M-817 and M-10 recovery from California

Postby jollyroger » Tue Apr 20, 2010 4:20 pm

So I bought these......things from government surplus in California. Bargains really. Right up to where it came time to go get them. A 5 ton dump truck and a hard shell 2 1/2 ton trailer. The 5 ton goes 55 mph with or without the trailer on flat ground. It goes less than that uphill. It makes good power though. On the climb from Bakersfield to Mojave it ran 35-40 cause I could keep it in 4th gear. Once we got out here to the big grades in Utah and Colorado it was third gear which tops out at 25. There is a huge split between 3rd and 4th. Anyway, 2600 miles round trip and 1300 miles of it in the 5 ton. $1200 in fuel and no major mechanical issues other than the soft top was shredded and I had to use some cardboard and duct tape to fix it and the horn stopped working. Left Thursday morning at 11 a.m. and got back Sunday night at 8:15. It was not the most fun 4 days I ever had but it was an adventure. And it beats the $4500 + that the railroad wanted to charge me for shipping and the $3500 the towing company wanted to charge me to ship it back to Colorado. The tow company charged me $800 to tow the truck from the military yard 20 miles to their yard. I got soaked on that one but i wasen't there so I guess I can't bitch too much. Pictures and video will be included as soon as I can post the vids to YouTube.......Now I'm being told the board attachment quota has been reached. I will keep working on it.

huh? cant you link your pics from a photobucket account or something? As opposed to attaching them to the forum? It gives you much more ability in your posts. You are the first person getting that error. I can show you ways around it, but my best suggestion is the photobucket account.

Just because you have a remote account doesnt meant they cant be in the post. Go quote Jimmy's first post from the latest carnage thread. Getter yet, quote this....

That is straight from photobucket, no attachment.
